A vaccine for Covid-19 cannot come soon enough according to Blackjack Promotions Managing Director Jason Miles.

Last week, news of a possible Covid-19 vaccine broke and was greeted with cautious enthusiasm by members of the travel retail industry.

  • A businesswoman looking to buy Blackjacks strip club was shot down Tuesday when the Kane County board refused to add a liquor license, which she said she needs to make the business worth buying.
  • 11 visitors have checked in at Blackjack Liquor.

Speaking to DFNI, Miles echoed the comments of many others, that a working vaccine would be a saving grace for the sector after months of challenges.

“The news of a possible vaccine is fantastic for the UK economy but especially the aviation and travel retail sectors which have been hit particularly hard,” he said.

“We hope this will see planes back in the sky, drive footfall in airports and shopping centres and restart the recovery. This positive outlook could not have come soon enough for all parts of the industry and will be central to protecting jobs.”

‘Ready to go’

But, he agrees that a better short-term provision is needed to help retailers and brands get back to business as soon as possible.

“While we monitor vaccine developments closely, we are preparing to get back on the shop-floor with specially created training and ongoing PPE provision,” he said. “When the time comes for the UK to come out of lockdown our team will be ready to do what they do best, while continuing to follow the guidelines and prioritise their own safety and the safety of customers at all times.”

Miles believes that once airports reopen the hunger for shopping among travellers will be high.

He explained: “Before the most recent lockdown, when stores were open for a short time, we were encouraged to see consumers getting out there and shopping. High value sales were taking place and our ambassadors were able to deliver a world class service in a Covid-friendly way.”

Blackjack Promotions staff were back at work welcoming shoppers into stores in airports across London and Dublin as travel retail outlets began to open again last week.

As World Duty Free Group reopened stores at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, Blackjack staff returned to the front line to greet shoppers in stores, including the specialist World of Whisky outlet in Heathrow Terminal 5.

The re-openings mark the culmination of hard work by staff, brands and retailers to ensure stores are safe and compliant with new regulations before the arrival of customers.

Blackjack Promotions Head of Travel Retail Leanne Nutter told DFNI: “It felt so good to be back in store for the World Duty Free openings! Our team are ready and raring to go – yes it’s quiet at times but passengers are keen to shop and with the stores looking so attractive, clean and safe, everyone has worked really hard to get to this moment.”

In Ireland, staff were also getting ready to return to work at Dublin Airport, where Blackjack’s #BeReady training videos and PPE resources have been deployed to ensure brand ambassadors and stores were ready to start business again.

“Seeing the team get back to work in Dublin with ARI was a great moment and one that felt a long time coming,” enthused Blackjack Promotions Head of International Fiona Rayner.

“It’s been wonderful to listen to stories from the shop floor and to see the team back doing what they do best – passengers can seem nervous in the new environment but the Aer Rianta team have done a wonderful job to get the stores ready. Onwards and upwards.”
